week 27: transferred!

(First paragraph is in response to news that he is an uncle - Bronte and David's baby is here!)
Well then, she's pretty darn beautiful haha and I'd rather be home at the moment. I have to give it to Bronte and David, most newborns are funny looking, but she is not. Not really sure what else to say about that... hmm... yeah, I'm sort of having a lack of words at the moment, pretty darn amazing.

This week was flipping crazy. Transfers were on Tuesday, so I got a new area! I am again way the fetch out in the middle of nowhere! Woo! I've been transferred to a place called Nelspruit* in Mpumalanga Province. It's a rich town (lots of mines in the area) and... there are white people! I have to admit, I missed white people, this is nice. Before I was in the land of milk and honey but now... I'm pretty sure this is the garden of Eden. The landscape is amazing, baboons and monkeys run rampant. The city is rich enough that its almost like America. Also, I have a chapel now! Also, our area is huge! Our branch president lives 100ks away, we made a 65k drive to a place called Sabie on Saturday to teach seminary. Sabie is the location of the largest man-made forest in the world. When we went there we had to wear jeans instead of slacks because we had to walk through the woods and such haha. Pretty darn sweet. Within the bounds of our area is Kurgar national park and Gods Window. Both of which are absolutely astounding.

My new companion is Elder Brackett from northern Cali. He is a pretty sweet guy, has about 6 months left. He reminds me a ton of my brother actually, so we get along fairly darn well.

The branch I'm in from what I've seen is not in such good shape. I experienced the most irreverent sacrament meeting of my life on Sunday. The members however are amazing! We have a handful of white members which is pretty cool, haven't had that before!

The work is pretty slow, we don't fill our days too well, but I'm hoping that within a few weeks that will change. We have town, township, and village in our area so that's kind of nice. Unfortunately, most of our area is too far to teach in. Our K limits are awful, I hate it. (Missionaries have mileage limits on their cars.) Not really sure how this whole hastening the work is supposed to happen with limited resources.

There are two other missionaries within 30ks of us, but besides that you have to drive 220ks to see any others. We are very isolated. We are close to the border of Mozambique and Swaziland.

That's my weekly report!

Love,
Elder Kelly McClellan

* Nelspruit – or Mbombela – is a city in northeastern South Africa. It is the capital of the Mpumalanga province. Located on the Crocodile River, Nelspruit lies about 110 kilometres (68 mi) by road west of the Mozambique border and 330 kilometres (210 mi) east of Johannesburg. week 26: hiking and zone conference

Alright this last week was crazy. Lots to report. Lots of pictures.

Let's first start off with the hike. Last Monday we had a zone activity that turned into a district activity because half the zone did not show up. That was awkward. Anyway, we went to a waterfall called Debengi. It was beautiful! Though I slipped on a rock and if Elder Kaufusi had not caught me I would have went for quite a good plunge. #neardeathexperience1 It was pretty sweet, and it was a super easy hike. Honestly the whole time it made me think of Shannon, pretty darn sure she would have loved it. After we discovered that half the zone would not be attending, we went off on a trek through the brush (not part of the hike.) This is ill advised, and I was very vocal about it. Brilliantly, we pressed forward, and by the end I only received two ticks on my bum! #Ihatewhenimright Eventually we made it out and I - once again - nearly fell on a slick rock.

After leaving the hike we made the 5 hour drive to Joburg for Zone Conference the next day. We (well, I) chose that we would go the long way through Gianai just so I could take a picture of a rock. I've been trying very very hard to suppress my desire to take pictures for hours, but I could no longer be contained on this day.

Eventually we made it to Joburg and went to a super cheesy (rich) pizza place (ha punny.). Any-who, we got there at like 8:30, we had to be in the mission home by about 9:30 in order to avoid receiving a verbal beating. We managed to make it, however as we left the pizza place we were charged by a group of homeless men. #neardeathexperience2

Zone Conference was the most powerful meeting I have ever attended, the Spirit rivaled that of the temple. First off, there is a special feeling when 100 Elders of the true church are gathered together, but second this was President Omer's last Zone Conference. After he bore his testimony he blessed the entire mission. I didn't even know you could bless hundreds of people at a time, but he dun did it. During his testimony I was fighting back  tears, but after the blessing they were flowing from everyone one in the room. As we left the chapel at the conclusion of the conference President Omer greeted each of us. I could not find words to tell him how I felt, so with tears still in my eyes I smiled and walked away. Now, you probably do not understand why it is that everyone (well lots of people) were so emotional, and you never will until you understand the type of man President Omer is.  He is the most Christ-like man I've ever meet. When he speaks he does so with power and authority. It's hard to describe him, but suffice it to say, he is an outstanding individual.

Friday we had a very interesting day. We had exchanges so Elder Brown and I went to Seshego. To sum it up there are 4 things I learned this day:
1) It sucks when your geyser (hot water tank) goes out and destroys your suit
2) It sucks to get shot at #neardeathexperience3
3) If you turn off your car while driving it does not record the K's you drive, but it does lock the steering wheel #neardeathexperience4
4) Wear your seat belt or get ejected #neardeathexperience5
I feel as though all of those are self explanatory so I shall refrain from adding any detail in the slightest.

Saturday was the big day, bum bum bum! Transfer News! On Tuesday President Omer had already told me that I was being transferred, so it was not a shock when that news came. My Zone Leader told me that the Assistants to the President told him I will be getting an undesirable companion. Elder Davis told me this transfer would be a growing experience... I'm terrified for tomorrow. I hate apostate missionaries. If I get one, someone will die, whether it be him or me, I know not, but the spirit of prophecy... or maybe pride... tells me that it won't be me! :)

Yesterday was my last day in Seshego, it was hard. During the announcements at church it was said that the group loves and will miss me. <3  As I bore my departing testimony I was having a pretty hard time. Over the past 6 months these people have become as family, I'm ready to leave Seshego, but never would I be ready to leave these people. From Brother Thabang to Sister Mary, these people range, and I'm of the firm opinion that these are the best Saints anywhere on all of the earth. It feels like I'm leaving home again, but this time I'll never come back.

Two months after the fact we have finally finished general conference! Did you notice how Boyd k Packer practically bore his final testimony?

I had not time to prepare a spiritual thought, but let it suffice for me to say that the things which I have spoken are true. Oh wait, fetch. Sorry, for some reason whenever I write my brain tries to use scriptural grammar and references.  Any-who, the church is true.

Elder Kelly McClellan

week 25

Life is going well, but yeah, I had to disappoint more young women this week. They kind of use babies as accessories, and if it's half white, that's just for the better!

The investigator work is progressing! We will be baptizing.... the week after  I leave this area. I was sad for a time, then I realized it doesn't really matter if I'm here as long as they make it. LA (less active) work is going even better, last month we had 95% contact with the members of our group! That's up 30% from average per month last year haha. The group is on fire right now with reactivation and temple work!

I shouldn't know this, but one of the APs (assistants to the mission president) is my friend, so I asked him, and he told me that  I am getting a new area next week. I'll be able to let you know two Mondays from now where it is that I am.

Next week will be a much better letter because there will be things to report.  Today we are driving two hours north to do a hike, then 6 hours south to stay in the mission home because Zone Conference is tomorrow. It's going to be a long flipping day.

I'm quite sad to be leaving the group, last night I went around getting pictures with everyone. It's quite easy to learn to love these people.

Regarding the track team, Wow that's sweet! Not going to lie, I'm most proud of Willy! That is awesome he got over 40, I can't remember but I'm pretty sure I never did that in a meet. Good for him! What was Maddee's throw? Pretty impressive place for a freshmen.

I'm super excited to hear about Panda's mission call, I actually had a dream the other night he came here and I trained him haha. If he goes anywhere in Africa southeast I'm going to try to see him in the MTC. But, he will probably go to Oklahoma so yeah...

I'll send you a better message next week!

week 24

Well, in all reality not much happened this week again. We are teaching a flipping ton... but everyone just listens because we are white. Friday night we were tracking just as it was becoming dark (which really is not the best idea) but anyway... I was on exchanges with Elder Mukarati from Zim. As we tracted we came across a young woman who was maybe 16? At first she saw Elder Mukarati and was about to tell us to go away, then I walked into view and she started getting all sorts of excited. It reminded me of a movie... maybe The Other Side of Heaven where they ask the missionary to give them a half white baby. It was super funny.  It's a competition among young women here to get pregnant... and if the man is white all the better. Pretty darn sad.

Today we were supposed to play soccer on the field in the world cup stadium.... they canceled this morning. We now have nothing to do. I've included pics from our tour of the stadium last week.

We are probably going to have 3 baptisms next transfer in this area, but the APs (Assistants to the mission President) told me I am for sure being transferred in 2 weeks. I'll most likely leave Limpopo and go back down to Gauntang province.

Lately I've been writing a lot of things. Answering questions that I feel that I need to understand better. I'm now on my 6th page of writing about the question "how does one align their will with God's?"... I've noticed that most of what I write would not make a ton of sense to anyone but me. In lessons this is not a problem... but In my mind I have so many things going on that it makes next to no sense what is happening haha...

Anyways I'm not in a good mood... so I'm going to end the email now and go sleep until we go out tonight.

week 23: pictures

Yeah almost nothing happened this week. This letter is not going to be very good.

I do have a ton of pictures though, so that's good.

Monday through Thursday were just normal missionary work, except I did go on exchanges. I went to a place called Mokopane with Elder Kaufausi. I love that guy, the whole day we were just laughing and making jokes, while at the same time sharing the gospel. It was a sweet day. That night we went and got chocolate covered waffles. Tasty.

Friday we went to Tzaneen for Zone Conference. It was an amazing drive, I'd been there a lot, but since this is my last time going up there we stopped lots to take pictures. Most of the pics were taken on the drive up there. At ZC they just shambocked us for sucking for the most part. Oh well. I still enjoyed it.

While tracting this week we had two people in a row laugh at us. I was like... what the fetch... no one has laughed at us before. Not guna lie, when we walked away I told my comp " I hope they enjoy hell".... I kinda feel bad about it now... but they made me sad, well, and mostly ticked off. I'm just here like "hey my brew, let me share something with you that will bless your life" and they're just all "naw man naw... ha ha ha ha". Chumps.

Life is awesome, the church is still true.

Love

week 22: a spiritual thought

This morning I have a spiritual thought to share.

NOTICE: This does at times contain the doctrine of Elder McClellan, not always of the church. If you cannot distinguish between the two please refrain from quoting me.

At our past zone conference President Omer gave us a challenge to read the Book of Mormon and look for the following.

1.) Jesus Christ, his mission and doctrine
2.) The doctrine of the Atonement and how to access it
3.) Answers to "questions of the soul"

During my recent Book of Mormon reading one thing in particular stood out to me, it is the ability we have to "choose liberty and eternal life through the great mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil." (2 Nephi 2:27)

I've spent quite a fair amount of time considering, "why is it that we would choose captivity and death?" The answer I found is really quite simple. " The natural man is an enemy to God"(Mosiah 3:19.) When we arrive at the age of accountability (Doctrine & Covenants 68:27) we change from having agency to moral agency. At this age some have been taught correct principals they can use to govern their lives, most have not. Fewer still understand why it is they should choose the right, again most do not. Though children of 8 years are unlikely to meet the pitfalls that come upon teenagers and adults, the natural man still begins to work in their lives. As we grow into adulthood the natural man begins to become more and more prevalent as our ability and understanding to sin increases. Its much easier to do "what feels right" rather than "what is right."

The problem is that the natural man is just that... NATURAL. Often times it's just second nature to do these things, especially when you don't have a firm understanding of the gospel. I believe that the reason that we so often choose to follow the natural man is due to the instant gratification we receive. Though "wickedness never was happiness"(Alma 41:10)  we can get a temporary high of sorts from breaking the commandments. People are all to often perfectly fine following this path with the natural man as  a guide, however there comes a time when no matter what you do that high will be turned off. Satan will leave you without the pleasure that you once enjoyed and darkness enters your life. Eventually the reality of your addiction filled life will be internalized, and sorrow consumes you.

We had an investigator by the name of Bobby (name changed.) For a long time Bobby was content with life, he was happy with the party life style he was living and it was routine to break the most serious of God's commandments. This life style began at age 13 when his mother passed away, and only ended when he met us (the missionaries.) After his conversion he wrote "When I met the missionaries I was at the lowest point in my life, my heart was hardened to a point where I could not take love. In fact I'm the one that walked up to them, seeing them pass by. Because I was at a state where I was exhausted by my stubbornness and my lack of spiritual strength."

Bobby has now been baptized, received the Priesthood, holds a temple recommend and is serving as the 2nd Counselor in the young men's presidency of his group. Looking back at the process of his conversion, from the day I meet him until the day I baptized him, I cant help but think about why such a mighty change was wrought in his life. One day I finally decided to ask him, he said " It was the atonement of Jesus Christ... Heavenly Father blessed my with inner peace. I stopped the loneliness by living the gospel... I came to realize that all the time I was in darkness the Lord never left, but it was I who had forsaken myself."

This powerful statement makes me thing of 2 Nephi 26:23-28:
"For behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you that the Lord God worketh not in darkness. He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation. Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying: Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; but he saith: Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy milk and honey, without money and without price. Behold, hath he commanded any that they should depart out of the synagogues, or out of the houses of worship? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. Hath he commanded any that they should not partake of his salvation? Behold I say unto you, Nay; but he hath given it free for all men; and he hath commanded his people that they should persuade all men to repentance. Behold, hath the Lord commanded any that they should not partake of his goodness? Behold I say unto you, Nay; but all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden."

I cannot pretend to be able to understand the Atonement of Jesus Christ, but I think I know a little. I do know a few parts of the atonement that directly affected Brother Bobby, and I'll take a minute to elaborate on each. The atonement of Christ accomplished 3 main things.
1. Gave people the ability to receive forgiveness for sins
2. Set a precedent for everyone to be resurrected
3. The Lord has experienced everything we have, are, and will go through.

Let's talk about the first... first... ha. Christ was offered as a sacrifice for our sins, and "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18) Bobby went through the process of repentance and has overcome the consequences that the natural man had brought into his life. As we were meeting with him helping him to repent I recall him telling us how he could feel God's love in his life.

Point two is self-explanatory.

Now for bullet point 3. Bobby had lost his family early on in life, and was left to the world until his aunt was finally able to take him in. As he learned of Jesus Christ and his earthly ministry he could feel support flowing unto him daily. As John 16:33 states:
"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
As he came unto Christ, walked the path of repentance and began to exercise faith, Bobby was able to have support through his trials. He was given strength the overcome his addictions and prepare himself for baptism. At times we may feel alone or like no one understands what it is we are going through, but the fact of the matter is that those statements are quite untrue. Heavenly Father and Christ are there to help us through anything and everything. As Bobby realized, God was always there, he was just missing the outstretched helping hand.

The natural man is the great stumbling block of the human race. It is something that during our lifetime we need to learn to overcome (that is however a letter for a different time.) Due to our imperfect lives there will be times that, just like Brother Bobby, we have to use the atonement to overcome the different affects that the natural man brings into our lives due to sin.

When it comes to the Atonement nothing is impossible. Forgiveness can be earned, broken hearts repaired, loneliness done away with. I believe its hymn 194, but one of the hymns states "I believe in Christ, so come what may." We may not be perfect, we may be falling backwards constantly, but if we keep strong in our faith and testimony of Christ there is no obstacle that is impassible.

I don't know if the point I'm trying to get across worked. Hopefully It did.

I know that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. I know that His love for us has no bounds. To those who choose to follow Him He has extended this promise (DC 76: 50-70):
"And again we bear record—for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just— They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given— That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power; And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true. They are they who are the church of the Firstborn. They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things— They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fullness, and of his glory; And are priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the Only Begotten Son. Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God— Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. And they shall overcome all things. Wherefore, let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet. These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever. These are they whom he shall bring with him, when he shall come in the clouds of heaven to reign on the earth over his people. These are they who shall have part in the first resurrection. These are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just. These are they who are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly place, the holiest of all. These are they who have come to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of Enoch, and of the Firstborn. These are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all. These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood. These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical."

Heavenly Father Loves you, Christ loves you. The beauty of Their plan is that all those who choose to follow Them may receive the blessings mentioned above. Better yet, we can enjoy them together.

Hopefully you enjoyed this.
Love yall lots,
Elder McClellan

week 21: life is sweet

Alright, so this week was pretty sweet. Basically what we are focusing on is our less active and inactive members. We are right on the verge of becoming a Branch (small congregation) and at this point reactivation is more critical it seems then conversion, though we are still finding new people to teach. We are having amazing success! Got quite a few LAs at church this Sunday! Wooo! That was awesome to see.

So right now in my flat its me, Brasher, Haynes, and Deichman. I love these guys, we get along so well! Having a blast with them. This morning for companion study we were not really feeling it so we decided to have a flat hymn hour, it was awesome! We sang all of our favourite songs, the spirit was super strong.

Not a whole lot is changing to be honest, though I am having problems with a recent convert whom we baptized in March. She has got a hankering for Elder McClellan it seems. She enjoys touching and pinching and doing all sorts of other unspeakable things I wish would not happen to me. Unfortunately she discovered our phone number last night. This is turning into a fiasco. I hate it. We may just have to drop a RC... that's kind of an awkward thing to do!

Honestly not a whole lot is going down right now. Last Monday I convinced the ZLs (Zone Leaders) to let me drive the 3 hours to a transfer I was supposed to go to but didn't really need to go to. That made me super happy, got to see all my mission buddies.

After a month and a half break I decided to finish Jesus The Christ. What an amazing book! It has a ton of amazing insights and info that help one to understand the technicalities that are occurring while reading through the New Testament.

Hmm right now Skrillex is playing in the shop. I like it lots.... but I guess I probably shouldn't :(

We are going to the game reserve today, we hear there is now a baby rhino there! So what must we do? We must chase it! :) And no this is not mean, he is still the size of a car haha. Also Elder Deichman has never seen any of the African animals, so we are going to show him the ropes! Oh yeah, fun fact. We recently learned that this reserve we run around in quite often has leopards and hyenas.... fun stuff. Also, hyenas are more dangerous than lions...just so you know, haha. And yes, they really do that laughing thing like in Lion King. I hate that as well.

Well, I'm pretty darn proud of Joe, good work kid. Don't worry about what haters say, Mormons gunna Morm, and that means choosing the right! John 15:18-21 "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own:  but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me."

Not a whole lot else to report, but uhm yeah. Life is sweet. :)

Love,
Elder McClellan
